What's That Sound

By Lisa Brown

Lisa Brown are a bit of a surprise. With that name you expect a solo female acoustic guitar type thing going off but it's nothing of the sort. It's indie boy pop with keyboards and drums and everything.

'What's That Sound?' kicks off the CD with a bit of a retro 80s vibe - Blondie's Atomic, Human League and all that. It's pretty funky too. Nice harmonies, electric beats and some almost porno guitar bends. It's quite nice and very well done. Not my cup of tea to be honest (a bit too pop) but all good.

The next track 'Anna' is much more my thing though. Beautiful jangly guitar, luscious soft melodies, hints of an English Sigur Ros, Badly Drawn Boy. The kind of song that you'd hear at the end of a decent Hugh Grant movie (he does have a couple you know!). I think I'm a fan. This is great.

We close the CD with a rather excellent acoustic tune called 'Snowfight in the city centre' recorded at a BBC session. Again, marvellous stuff.

I really like Lisa Brown (Gosh: That sounds like something I'd say back in Junior School!)

May I recommend Lisa Brown's first EP, No Light Left, which has the full band version of 'Snowfight In The City Centre' and the best tune they've done 'No Light Left'. It is very very good.

I think you can still get it from www.lisabrown.net.
