By The Wow
The Wow featuring ex-members from Spy vs. Spy and Future Adventures ... blah blah blah ... to be honest I don't care who they were in, I hate this ex-members of whoever rubbish. Let me decide on the merit of the music, not on some cliquey who's who of alternative music. Sorry about that. Anyway ... back to the music.
This is good stuff! Reminds me of the newer stuff to come from DC label post hardcore/rock stalwarts Dischord. Now surely that can't be a bad thing.
From the erratic sometimes jerky drum beats on the opener "Blood Sucker" to the catchy and melodic guitar work on "Long Time Ago" this is a spine tingler. Everything seems to work. The vocals go from light and melodic to dark and menacing in a flash, the bass lines swing sometimes melancholy between guitar and drums giving the whole EP a layered sound, not unlike "End Hits" period Fugazi or quieter parts of Cat on Form. Finally to top it off: fantastic artwork and a good lo-fi production.
If you're a fan of the Touch and Go sound mixed with the rockier parts of some indie/art rock then this is one for you.
