Delay pedal mania, breathy reverb ridden vocals & keyboard noises that go woooooooouuuuup..p..p..p! Inevitably your reviewer is going to reach for their off the peg Coldplay (tired) and Elbow (starting to look worn) comparisons! Although they are comfortably competing on the same playing field as the aforementioned angst masters, Maupa bring enough to the mix to distinguish.
The six Accrington lads have avoided the Mersey beat route in favour of the subtle epic and yet occasional folk routes seep in and tease memories of James B-sides. There's plenty of depth in title track "Helpless" so as to be one of those songs you only really appreciate some time later. The supporting cast fit the bill in the mournful "Sourfruit" and the straighter rock tune "The Bag Song".
If Maupa are to have big league success then ironically they may have to lose the more interesting points of their music. Let us hope not as this is promising stuff in its whirly angst field.
