Rock n Roll

By Ryan Adams

Apparently the result of a tantrum after his record label told him that his initial efforts were too depressing we have former mopey alt.country boy turned 80's rock god. Seemingly he's loving it too. Packed with spiky tunes that are shamelessly hedonistic this is a feel-good album that will set you up nicely for a night out on the tiles. There are shades of Oasis (or Oasis aping T-Rex at least) in the dirty rock openers. The joyous 'Boys' almost steals the show, closely contesting 'Do Miss America' (featuring Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong and actress - and Adams' current partner - Parker Posey on backing vocals) and 'Wish You Were Here', where Adams, lyrically at least, returns to his former self, "It's totally fucked, I'm totally fucked, wish you were here". However, the triumphant foot-stomper 'So Alive' sees Adams give his best vocal delivery to date and lodges a firm stake as one of the best songs to be released this year. It's the kind of song that you not only hear but feel and makes up for the parts of the album that don't quite match the quality we get 85% of the time from Adams. This may just win over a few people put of by the alt.country tag bandied about with his music, for here Ryan Adams displays he truly is rock n roll.

It's the only song i've heard from Rock & Roll which i've been told is crap. Love is hell 1 & 2 are truly amazing.

Rock and Roll is fucking ace. Uncut got in a beef cos his voice was different and it wasn't all downbeat. Yes he has an amazing voice, yes he writes some ace songs but some of the stuff on Rock n Roll easily stands up with his other work. So Alive is awesome, She's Lost Total Control, This Is It...the whole album is great. Get Rock n Roll, I listen to it more than Love is Hell which I fucking love.

Fuck the Universe is class. Rock n Roll is a great album cos it captures how he is as a live performer I think.
