The Sugars
"Lock Up Your Mothers" - an interview with The Sugars!
You're number 36 in the indie singles chart. Excited?
Anna Greenaway: Hell yeah! We're not quite sure how though, it didn't even have a barcode.
Have you thought about the album yet?
Matt Bolton: We're not ready for that yet - right now it's all about nailing it live and seeing the reaction to the songs we've already written.
I like the name. Sugar's an innocent pleasure but it's also really bad for you - ooh I feel a metaphor coming on... Should our mothers know about The Sugars?
AG: We're all good for you, if you like us that is... otherwise you might writhe in anger. We're totally a love-hate thing.
MB: It was a nod to all the harmony groups we collect but there is definitely something darker that belies the name.
You remind me of the White Stripes...
MB: We'll always get the comparison. Jack was the first white boy to really crank it up and strip it down, but people think that Jack owns the 12 bars and even he'd tell you that's not true.
What's the appeal of the 50s style?
MB: It's just nice to hark back to an era where clothes fit properly. And tracksuits don't look good on me.
I hear you're Sugababes fans - what's their definitive line-up? Could The Sugars withstand a change of personnel?
AG: They're a great pop band but I don't think we can really call them influences. Matt's more inspired by the beauty of Heidi Sugababe rather than anything musical.
MB: They just get fed fantastic songs and Heidi is a doll. People bemoan our lack of a bass but there will only ever be three Sugars.
I'll just put 'Mutya' then. Got any slick rock'n'roll moves? Can you mash potato?
Jodie Wyatt: We've been known to cat burgle around various dancefloors, it's a craze we're hoping will spread once we make some swag bags!
Any message for the kids out there?
JW: Throw your mothers out the window and love your record player, ha ha.
The Sugars' debut single release is out now on Bad Sneakers Records, "Doo-Wop (Sugar So Sweet)" / "TV". The band are currently on tour and play at Wakefield Escobar on Friday 28th April.
