Emotional Junkmail

By Miss Black America

Have you seen the video? Picture the scene - a darkened room, with a table in the middle. On the table is a plate of cookies at one side and four pints of milk lined up in a row at the other side with an empty glass next to them. An 'emo' guy, wearing black of course, comes and sits at the table, head on to the camera.

As the music begins he starts to empty a pint of milk into the glass and proceeds to drink. As the song progresses, he gathers pace, interspersing his milk consumption with cookie eating. When the milk bottle becomes empty, he places it back in the exact same place it came from (O.C.D.?). As the intake gets more rapid, milk begins to dribble down his chin and top. He is struggling for breath. As he gets to the fourth and last pint, he just drinks from the bottle. He is literally pouring it down his throat, it is gushing down his face and second skin black t-shirt. It gets too much and it begins to come back out in the direction it went in, he then leans forward and is sick all over the table.

The video might keep you oddly captivated, but without it, the song alone won't. The lyrics are weak, lack any kind of meaning and when standing on their own are clearly anything but ("The billboards fade to silhouettes, And I've learned to look the other way. Into the Sun"- I'm sorry ... what?).

Take the lyrics out and we might be able to work with something here; a lovely, subtle, mazy guitar riff lying underneath a strong thumping drum beat, a cohesive band and a singer's voice which isn't half bad.

I've heard their other offerings, and I've liked them. If I was a school teacher writing their report, it would come under the category 'Miss Black America are being distracted by other members of the class and must learn to trust their instincts. Must try harder'.

If this previous style is lost, they need to rediscover it and quickly. If not, the Darlington four-piece need to hire lyrists. Failing that, just make videos.

mmmm, I thought Darlo was wrong. But the band's press release says Darlington. Did Seymour relocate, or was that where he was from originally?

MBA are from Bury St Edmonds in Suffolk.

Although they did go to Darlington on tour, so maybe that's where you got confused. ;)

I know what it is. It's the MBA press release. It states "The Darlington four piece ..." in the middle of it. But it mentioned their tour mates We Start Fires earlier. It's really badly written (being an MBA press release).

It's actually me in the video. It's funny, I've had the same haircut since 1993, when I was trying to copy Brett Anderson/Alex James/Justine Frischmann. When the band started in 1999 I was obviously trying to be Richey Manic and/or Brian Molko, and now I'm emo, apparently. What should I do? I hate emo but I love my hair. Moral dilemma!
