The Needles

Live at Bar 1-20 (Huddersfield) on Saturday, 9th September 2006

Poor old Huddersfield music scene, struggling manfully under the pressure of an audience made up generally of 16 somethings more concerned about which shade of black to dye their hair before their next bout of Emo, Screamo, Eskimo or whatevermo. It's therefore not surprising that tonight's gig is so poorly attended you genuinely feel like making an apology to The Needles as they belt out their power-pop unabashed by the empty room in front of them. Kids round here, they wouldn't know a good band if they came to their house and tattooed their parents' backsides. Anyhow as mentioned this has little effect on the band who note-perfectly bang out some excellent tunes. Having been marginally disappointed by the forthcoming album it's only live that it all makes sense and one can truly appreciate the goods on offer. Last single "Dianne" crackles and new single "Summer Girls" is harmony driven perfection. Fortunately the band is persuaded by the handful of happy punters to play one more and fittingly deliver with the stomping "Delivery Day". If some more of the energy here can be captured on record then The Needles will have cracked it and then when fans of the future review their early tour dates they will be able to wonder: "God how did I miss the fact they were playing Huddersfield... ah yes hair dye!"

Huddersfield's Music Scene is struggling.

The Needles album is a let down.

This review says more about the reviewer than the gig itself.

As I was in attendance at this gig, I felt compelled to reply.

This review is awful, the 'reviewer' didn't even arrive at the gig until ten minutes into The Needles Set! and left immediatley after.

It has to be said!

There were no 16 year old emo kids present at the gig, maybe just a few thirtysomethings fearful that their time may have passed them by, and in order to justify this, take pleasure in passing on their bullshit to the masses. Lies!

Please isn't it about time we reviewed reviewers?

Discuss

People do just that every day. And you did too. There's no need to make a plea, it is already happening (as you just proved). No one will argue against you on that one.

And thanks for adding your thoughts on this particular gig to those of Rick.

Now a response to your thoughts... as for the review itself being "awful" I would disagree. Rick described the venue/atmosphere, describes what the band played (in some depth), the crowd's reaction to those songs and them summarised the show. Well structured to me, and read very well.

To close, I'd add that it matters very little if our reviewer left after The Needles finished in my opinion.

Of course I left after The Needles finished...they were the last band on! I never said there were any Emo kids there...that was the whole point that there were not any young audience members there! Duh! Why don't you review your own lack of observational powers and re-read the review a few times.

The review, sadly is very true. Huddersfield needs to do so much more for its music scene, and only Bar 120 are doing their bit. The way I saw the review was not as a slagging off of Bar 120, but narrow minded emo scenesters who could do a lot worse than to go and check out a band they haven't heard of. You never know, they might like them.

The last thing I would do is slag off Bar 120 - They are ace. At least someone understood my point

I agree about the lack of interest showing towards bands performing at the Bar 120. With an area so full of students you would think it would be buzzing, but sadly not. I went to watch YOUR NEW ANTIQUE and and NEW VINYL at this particular venue. Luckily YOUR NEW ANTIQUE had a fair few turn out to see them which gave both bands a purpose to play. It's a shame the venue isn't better supported as I found it to be one of the better venues on my travels....Perhaps LMS could maybe give it a bit of push,(yes I know its in Huddersfield) after all, any place that wants to promote bands deserves a bit of recognition .

Agreed.

HMS does have a website. Here is the link if anyone is interested:

Maybe it's advertising or something connected, but kids in Huddersfield just don't seem to bother. I can't work it out. York has a vibrant music scene, yet doesn't have a 'YMS' (correct me if I'm wrong). When I was 15/16, I used to look forward to going down to The Junction or Fibbers to see bands after school. Maybe attitudes have changed, which would be a huge shame. I can only hope it's down to advertising, but when I was in my teens the main thing was word of mouth.

It's hit or miss with Huds. Coming from Huds we play at Bar 120 a lot and sometimes it's great and others quiet. It's the same for the other Huds bands I know, seems little logic to it. It's a great venue though and a lovely bunch of people who run it. I think the biggest problem is one of history. For too many years there was no music scene here and it is just ingrained into the people to look to Leeds first before checking closer to home. Given time these things will change but one or two will suffer along the way...The Needles being a case in point.
