Seether

Live at Leeds Metropolitan University on Sunday, 8th October 2006

Art Of Dying kick off tonight's proceedings with their grunge heavy melodic metal, throwing a party like it's 1992 again. Sounding like a much beefier Pearl Jam, these lads tear through highlights from their current self-titled UK release with enthusiasm, vigor and charm. The band are a personable bunch between songs, even managing a few mosh-pits, their instant likeability has the crowd almost literally bowing in worship of their new heroes. There is plenty to like about Art Of Dying, choice cuts from the album such as "Get Through This" sound massive, channeling the spirit of Vedder with raucous screaming thrown in for good measure. That the band chose to end their set by inviting everyone to the merchandise stand for a meet and greet, and as the entire capacity of the Met rush to meet their new heroes, the evening reaches its peak. Nothing Seether can do will top this.

And as expected, Seether are terrible by comparison. How this band ever managed to gain even a moderate fan base is beyond me, let alone packing out the Met on a Sunday night. But when you take a look around the grinning, dribbling fools that make up most of the clientèle in here tonight, it's easy to see. Seether basically seem inept at writing anything remotely resembling a tune, couple that with the fact that no-one would even care who they were if it wasn't for Amy Lee and Spiderman and it becomes extremely difficult to care about this band. Their best songs are notable only through the amount of people singing along, but aside from that, the atmosphere is soulless. To compare this to the majesty that came before it would be completely unfair. It would be wrong to ask a band as dishwater dull as Seether to compete with any band. On the strength of tonight's performance they could have followed Daphne and Celeste and still failed.

I don't understand the relevence of this statement. Are you suggesting that Seether deserve more credit than the reviewer suggests merely because they brought a good band (Art Of Dying) with them.

Or conversely, that maybe that Art Of Dying ought to be grateful to Seether because without them they were brought to an audience and our reviewer's attention.

Or that a band (in this case Art Of Dying) needs a leg up from another band to be classed as good?

Or that a headline band must be judged better than a support band, because without the headline band the support band would not have the audience?

Or something else.

As you can see I'm a little puzzled as to what you were getting at.

well heres my view on it. i wont say that a band are good purely because they have a profile. just because i'd never heard of Art of Dying before doesnt mean they werent better than the headliners. they are put on the bill in that order based on their profile, not how good they are. if that was the case, many of todays huge bands would be on bills with less established acts headlining, because in reality, being the biggest band on the block doesnt always guarantee they're the best.
