By Henrik Schwarz
As part of series now stretching over a mammoth ten years, DJ Kicks now presents a mix from the German based techno DJ and artist Henrik Schwarz.
The mixed compilation begins with a short intro before drifting into the elegant, and rather familiar jazz piece that is Moondog's Bird's Lament, which was heavily sampled to great effect in the past by Mr Scruff in the track "Get A Move On". The set features two of Henrik's own tracks (one of which is a remix) and moves on through an array of obscure artists, pulling out a few legends along the way such as "The King of Soul" James Brown, Ninja Tune big boys Coldcut, Detroit techno masters Drexciya & Robert Hood, and finishes with another incredibly talented soul legend in the shape of Marvin Gaye before departing with a short morphed outro.
Henrik comes up with a mix which is varied, warm, naturally soulful, and ridden with light tribal rhythms. Technically Schwarz displays some smooth touches; his mixing is gentle, natural and incredibly seamless from one track to the next. This is a mix that will appeal to the fans of Leeds based techno night Supercondutor just as much as it does to fans of the Hi-Fi Club. And as far mixed compilations go, this is very, very good.
