From the beginning of November it's impossible to escape the sounds of Christmas. Whether it's popular hymns played on panpipes or 70's glam smashes, tolerance levels have usually plummeted before December begins. Thankfully this compilation of 11 tracks from the artists connected with the KIDS label brings a fresh approach to those tiresome Christmas tunes along with some exciting originals.
The album kicks off with a punk-fuelled blast of Slade's 'Merry Christmas Everybody' by the KIDS Allstarz. But it's pretty calm compared to Popular Workshop's take on 'Christmas Wrapping'. At the other end of the scale there are great versions of 'White Christmas' by Might Six Ninety and Findlay Brown's take on 'Last Christmas' is refreshing. In the middle are some great originals where The Wombats provide the best with 'Is This Christmas?'
What makes the album so good is the variety. It zips from frantic punk to relaxed melodies and everything between with ease. All the covers are excellent. The artists have brought them back to life and into the 21st century, while the originals prove that you don't have to be called Sir Cliff to come up with something new. This is a great album to have for an alternative Christmas.
