By Dinosaur Jr
There's some grunge characters appearing again recently on these shores; Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, The Melvins, Smashing Pumpkins all playing this year (some last year too). The messiest of them all, Dinosaur Jr, are back with what is their distinctive return to form from upcoming album 'Beyond'. The sound for single 'Been There All The Time', though heavily distorted, is quite cleanly produced for the fuzzy fellas. The solos have J Mascis' name all over them: long, fiddly arrangements of utter noise. I was expecting some guitar squeals to leak out in the silent gaps during the verses, but left a little disappointed. Not as much though as listening to the b-side 'Back To Your Heart', a slow, bluesy track very similar to the slow stuff by the Foo Fighters. There are more vocals (mainly repeating the title) and less solos. And at 4.27 minutes it's a little tedious; I hope the album contains more of the first track than the latter.
