Broken Radio

By Jesse Malin

This song was made for The Boss. The addition of Bruce Springsteen's vocals to this tale of escapism through the car radio is an arena anthem worthy of its recent blitz on Radio 2.

After the slow piano notes that accompany Malin at the start, the guitars and The Boss show up to help out in the second half. The two vocals weave well together, and add to that Ryan Adams' guitar skills and you have a winner. With lyrics like 'The angels love you more than you know / Raised on rivalry and Rock 'n Roll' you can tell you're listening to a great singer-songwriter, who is just emerging from in his friend Adams' shadow, despite excellent live shows and playing in some sort of band (Heart Attack, D Generation) for over thirty years. I cannot say a bad word about this man, and although this is not my favourite track from the latest album 'Glitter In The Gutter', I think it will gain him a lot of fans through the not-so-broken Radio 2.

Over 20 years maybe, Jesse isn't THAT old

This is a great tune off a great album. It's amazing that he isn't more popular given the quality of his songwriting, but it suits me just fine if we keep getting to see him in small venues!

Jesse started in the band Heart Attack that were playing in CBGB's when he was just 12. I included this time. I believe he is nearing forty, but he dosen't look it.
