New Young Pony Club

Live at Cockpit on Wednesday, 30th May 2007

I have to admit that when I arrived at The Cockpit this evening I was rather excited - tonight's gig was sold out, I had a new dress and the stage was all decked out in various neon lights and decorative paraphernalia.

First up were a band that I didn't manage to catch the name of at the time but following their performance I couldn't even be bothered to try and find it out. I'm not sure the correct nu-rave way to say this but they were pretty rubbish. To give credit where credit's due, they looked great, but it was just a rather flat and uninspiring performance.

Next up it was on to the main event. New Young Pony Club were also styled up to the max and looking hot - the stunning yet demure keyboardist, the exuberant lead singer with Shirley Manson-esque voice... oh, and the guitarist who looks like Howard Moon out of The Mighty Boosh.

Although enjoyable and fun, New Young Pony Club just failed to deliver. Hits such as Ice-cream had people throwing some shapes and generally waving their glow sticks in the air like they just don't care but, I can't put my finger on it, something was missing.

Lead singer Tahita had tons of energy and definite sex appeal - I even overheard a couple of other audience members discussing whether or not she was "filth" (A definite Y.E.S in my opinion but I'll let you make up your own minds).

When the band returned to the stage for a short encore we were promised that the next track would "knock your socks off", prompting one over zealous nu-raver to remove their socks and fling them towards the stage. My socks, both real and metaphorical, however remained firmly on throughout.

All in all a pleasant evening but sadly yet another unfortunate example of style over substance.

I beg to differ; they seemed both stylish AND substantial to me! It was just a wee bit odd that there was more movement in my part of the audience (about half way back) than there was at the front. As far as I'm concerned, it's difficult to listen to these guys without wanting to dance your *actual* socks off.

Oh, and the support were Holy Hail; not rubbish, exactly, but perhaps rather too shouty at times.
