Originally released last year in North America, Be He Me is the type of experimental indie rock which has already seen the Annuals compared to Canadian giants such as Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, though a much closer assessment would be to probably think along the lines of a more sonically substantial and sterile version of fellow US counterparts Animal Collective.
Thankfully, Virgin Records have handed the North Carolina six-piece the opportunity to shine on the other side of the Atlantic with a full European release. This impressive debut record is awash with thick multi-layers of percussion, warm guitar and fun synthesized action, whilst reverberated vocals bounce off one another to result in some good natured and interesting indie fun.
Be He Me is a mammoth fifteen tracks long, so it might not come as a surprise to find a few fillers here and there. And though the band never quite reach the heights of the wonderful opener 'Brother' there is still enough originality and quality here to suggest that the Annuals are a more than worthy addition to the indie coalition.
