Girls Who Play Guitars

By Maximo Park

The a phrase "post-libertine" is used a lot these days to describe a certain style of music or band; with the emergence of The Futureheads and subsequently Maximo Park I've noticed a large number of sound-alikes sprouting up that could be described as "post-Maximo Park" bands, so it's interesting to see what the forerunners of the "angular" art-pop scene has to offer.

The theme behind the song "Girls Who Play Guitars" seems to be one of reminiscence, which is a little ironic as it leaves me thinking of their earlier work. It is quintessentially Maximo Park so fans of the band should be pleased, but for a band on their second album it doesn't push any boundaries and nor does it quite live up to past glories such as "Graffiti" and "Apply Some Pressure", so by their own standards it's not one of their stronger singles.

Having said that it's a decent enough tune and it's got a quite catchy chorus even if it isn't a classic, so it's unlikely Maximo Park are going to be toppled from their thrown by these young pretenders just yet.

Maximo Park: "forerunners of the "angular" art-pop scene"? mmmm are you sure?

It's subjective but I think it's a fair statement. I take it you'd suggest another band / bands?

I guess it depends on your definition of angular art-pop and when that began. Certainly the grouping together of bands to invent another genre which is exactly the same as lot's of other genres i.e. Math Rock = Angular Art-pop etc is something that can only be blamed on we reviewing types. I would put Maximo Park down as a band who were picked up by a Major looking to cash in after the initial surge of the scene you are referring to. But frankly it's all bollocks - just enjoy the music.
