On first listen I'd have said that this tune wasn't half as exciting as it liked to think it was (or indeed, as a large number of people - all more important than I - seemed to think it was.) Sure, it jangled, it jerked and it leapt, but it still sounded ever so slightly two dimensional. However, ladies and gentlemen, I have decided that it is what one might term 'a grower'. I can even imagine that if I ever found myself hearing this tune jangling away in the appropriate milieu then I myself would be amongst those doing the jerking and leaping.
It's still far from being a perfect pop record, of course, and the cynical may say that it hints at ambition limited to becoming something of a Mancunian Pigeon Detectives. However, it's a crisp sunny autumn day and I'm feeling unusually devoid of cynicism, so I'll appreciate this offering on its own merits and reserve judgement regarding their depth (or lack thereof) until they've put out a couple more discs.
