This February will have an extra day this year, as it's a leap year and all. But another day in that month which could indeed be good for the music industry is the 11th. What's happening on that day do I hear you ask? Well, it's a Monday so people will be going back to work after a weekend of over drinking and oversleeping... ok, I'll shut up... The Singles release their 2nd album!
Having thrown album number one out there to the masses in 2003, they had a good year in '07 with lots of air play and hitting the road. They have been described as one of the last real rock 'n' roll bands on the planet, but I don't see rock 'n' roll here. It's all a bit slow, a bit tepid, seemingly basic indie work that we are all desensitised to these days. They also take elements from pop and of course the influence is there from Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and the other legends the band wants to capture the spirit of. The first song is a tad sluggish though.
The second song 'Love Is Just A Game' is more upbeat and in your face, but extremely short and ending suddenly. There are lots of other bands out there like this, but without that 'n' roll edge to their rock. These are mostly happy joyful songs about love, beauty and enjoying life. The album title track is slightly heavier to begin, with a 'going to war' feel to the opening drums but then it starts to sound like the other songs. They change the pace up and down now and then but it's all very samey. Touches of folk come through occasionally in 'The Most Beautiful Girl' amongst others, but it's not groundbreaking stuff. I do think people will like The Singles, but if they do I doubt they'll be raving too much about them. Decidedly average but worth a listen.
