We're All Going To Die
By Malcolm Middleton
The epic sound of this song - by the man co-responsible for one of the finest bands of the past 20 years, Arab Strap - has all the ingredients for the perfect number one. A sing-along chorus, a goosebump-inducing key change and a savvy media campaign by Radio 1.
However the battle to have this as Christmas number one failed and we can now re-listen to the track for the epic brilliance that it is without the hype.
If more people hear the second Middleton album, 'A Brighter Beat' because of the battle then I guess that's a good thing. However, the optimist in me thinks that the Christmas number one should be filled with mistletoe and wine and that Leon was right to have it.
'We're all going to die' has a can-can beat driving an infectious melody counter-pointed by sheer Scottish miserabilism. You really cannot fault this, so get the song and watch out for record company execs submitting Malcolm for X Factor auditions 2008!
