Blacklands describe themselves as "a thrilling baroque rock monster now with searing violin and exquisite keys" on their Myspace page. And if you were just waiting for the next big thrilling baroque rock monster then you're in luck here!
Led by the strings and piano 'Bring It On Down' is a mesmerising piece of work. And it does feel as though you are listening to a piece of work. This is not merely a song; this has depth in spades and is like taking a step back in time. I must admit however it did take me a few listens to get into it, but with each listen my ears were opened to the full magnitude song. The deep vocals are a nice contrast to the sweet piano and strings and the result is something different to most of what you will hear.
The baroque influence is clear in Sleeping Diamond, although it does sound slightly more contemporary than the previous track with layered vocals and a steady bass rhythm. The staccato strings are a nice touch and again the strings are a highlight whenever they are played.
If you're interested in hearing music with plenty of depth then Blacklands are well worth a listen. Nick Cave is one of their influences and fans of Nick Cave will find plenty to enjoy in these two tracks. It's not something personally I would listen often to but the depth of the music really drags you in. An intriguing teaser...
