Like Soldiers Do isn't on the new album because it's an acoustic version of a song from his second album, Brewing Up With Billy Bragg, which was released fourteen years ago.
By Billy Bragg
'I Keep The Faith' is taken from Billy Bragg's latest album 'Mr Love And Justice'. The single is sweet and mellow and does not take any risks. It's a mile away from his punk roots. While the track is well performed after a few listens it does seem quite bland.
The b-side 'Like Soldiers Do' is a political track that takes a pop at the current wars. With an Irish folk feel to it, the song is stronger and more interesting than 'I Keep The Faith'. The questions about the war and whether it's worth fighting make it compelling listening. It seems a shame that this track is missing from the album.
Of the two tracks it seems 'I Keep The Faith' is a new avenue for Billy Bragg, but he's proving that he still has some strong views and isn't ashamed to voice them with 'Like Soldiers Do'.
