Pulled Apart by Horses @ Faversham

By Chris Lowe
It has seriously taken me a few days to piece together this review. I've been finding it a strain on my creative juice-box to summon the correct words to emphasise the compelling amount of joy received from this gleefully amazing line-up which only set punters back a mere £4. It is three new Leeds-based thoroughbreds that provide a lot more than a Saturday night wake-up call for us hungover onlookers.

Dinosaur Pile-up is not a new CGI based DreamWorks epic with Tom Hanks doing the voiceover of a hero Dinosaur. It's a new 3-piece rock outfit fronted by the charmingly hunky Matthew Bigland who once sailed the short lived waves of wolf-rock act Mother Vulpine. This Weezery attempt at popular songwriting has more hooks in it than a Japanese fishing boat. From the beginning of the performance the set is riddled with whirling crunchy guitar lines, pummelling drum crescendos and adventurous pop choruses. 'Love is a Boat and were Sinking' affected me in such a way I drooled onto my partner and shouted "You get the fucking beers". DPU will assure you of the fact that the likes of trouser slacked rock (Weezer, Granddaddy, Pavement) can have a little bit of a bite as well as some edge.

Whoa be-gone are the days of good old-fashioned blues and the remorseful deadbeat drunk throwing booze down his neck-end to wash away the woefully painful traits of being a love sick man. So we have an act here The Old Romantic Killer Band who have taken the blues and given it a ruddy good 2008 wake-up call. It's run-for-your-life thrashy 2-piece blues pop and ORKB embark on a full throttle girth grinding presentation of it. I for one moved my hips around for far too long in an almost mesmerizing manor. The two members that make up ORKB put on a wondrous show tonight and the majority of onlookers seem enthralled. Each song performed is played with guts and stamina, as the audience is steadily building over the course of the night. Live renditions of 'Lovers Pass' and recent single 'You Don't Know How to Love' strike a good amount of adrenalin and enthusiasm into our veins from this act tonight. Lead vocalist Harry has the voice of a pissed up angel that somehow can sing pitch perfect. Did I mention his ginger beard?

Pulled Apart by Horses have to be the first band I've gone out of my way to want to listen to because of a name. I mean come on, that is a fucking stonking good name. But I bet they are a big steaming barrow full of donkey cock though... 'Eeeeeee, urrrrrrrrrr' (sound of game show buzzer) wrong! PABH mount the stage all dressed like cool tight jeaned, mutha-fuckas and a healthy large crowd are now eagerly waiting (you could smell the eagerness). They burst into the first song like a pack of tearaways on a schoolyard and you can't help but want to join in. It's reminiscent of At the Drive-In performance-wise and yet you feel like you're part of something new and a little dangerous. These four fit lads proceed to be part-time Chippendales by losing various articles of clothing in the storm and animated antics take place making it difficult to focus after a few bevies. It's not all buff stage show wildness though. Obvious live favourite 'High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive' (surely the most remarkable song title ever) is a fucking tune and a half and shows of an abundance of hi-octane riffery and stellar songwriting. This band will scold you live and will hopefully remain to live up to expectations. Best live act in Leeds so far for 2008.
