New Writers & Photographers
Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in contributing to this website. Here's how it works at LMS ...
Writing
- We run on an open-submission basis which means you can submit reviews at any time (say of a CD you bought, or gig you attended). Ie, you do not need to pre-arrange with myself or alert me to the fact - just write and submit.
- We also support our writers by trying to arrange guestlists and tickets for gigs (should they ask). We also get ticket offers and these are forwarded to the team in case anyone is interested in taking them.
- And I also have bucket loads of CDs posted to me which I distribute out for review. You get to keep all CDs.
The first steps
- The first step is for all new writers to submit a couple of articles to the site, of a CD they have bought or heard recently, or of a gig they attended. This will get us familiar with your interests and your writing style, etc. It is also to separate out those people that contact out of curiosity as opposed to those with a real and keen interest in writing reviews, etc.
- We will (usually) publish these sample articles - please state clearly if you do not wish your samples to be published, and your request will be honoured. Note; we do not promise to publish all samples.
- Once you have submitted some samples, we will add your name to our maling list, thereafter you will get to see what CDs we have available, what ticket offers we have, and so on.
Some rules
- Writers cannot write about their own band, friend's band or similar. You must be totally neutral to the band you are writing about. Reviews of this nature are fairly easy to spot, so please don't try.
- All writers must write under their own (real) name.
And a final point: give we are not a company or run as such we have no ability to pay for submissions, except in free tickets and exposure via the site and the photographer and writer profiles.
All submissions (words as .doc, .txt or embedded in an email) to info [ at ] leedsmusicscene.net
Any further questions please ask.
Photography
Not being a commercial set up we cannot pay for submissions, however instead we offer full credit to your work and a link to your website as part of the article the photo is submitted for. A number of our photographers have had their images spotted on LMS by labels and management, resulting in them being commissioned for album inlays, tours and magazines.
We will also try to arrange guestlists and tickets where applicable in return for any submissions, though this does not stop adhoc or unsolicited submissions at any time (say you see a review on site that you took photos at).
Where we have an opportunity for press tickets I shall send a note out, but do not be afraid to ask, I can usually sort stuff out if I know I can also get some words to go with them.
Any questions, please ask. In the meantime, I shall add you to my list of potential photographers.
PS - We have a links section on LMS for Leeds-based photographers, if you have a website with your portfolio on it then get in touch and I'll add you to the links page.
