Gig Review

A self-styled purveyor of 'Northern Folk' kicked off proceedings at the 360 Club tonight, although Ben Peel didn't quite qualify this label with his first few tracks, coming across as more like Brit Pop goes acoustic.

FILMS
THE PABLOS
ARTIBELLA
BEN PEEL

Time: 20:00 - 23:30

FILMS: Fresh from their live radio session for BBC Introducing.

To date FILMS have headlined such venues as The Faversham, HiFi and
The Brudenell Social Club, and have recently been working on their
first EP, recording at Universal in London and with producer Charlie
Andrew who worked with Man Like Me, Eugene McGuinness,
Micachu and the Shapes.

Their music, which they uncertainly label (for want of a better name)
jump- or trip-folk, has, in their words, a pert and merciless sound.
Pushed and pulled, borrowing and wedging various lo-fi, hip hop and
folky pockets to make a haunting and original mulch.

Review:
Films are the latest incarnation of the artists formally known as Daljit Dhaliwal. Untutored, slight rhythmic guitar work and precision beats formulate a spooky atmos to which their brooding, enigmatic performance adds great character. The songs are hung out on sparse, razor wire rhythm guitar and rumble along to disembodied, dead pan vocals. Graceful piano work provides just a flickering of light in their murky depths. Equal parts hip hop as joy division, Films are tricky to pin down and that's what makes them interesting. Tom Keighley - Leeds Music Scene

THE PABLOS:

received a great media response, including airtime on Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 show, who described the music as 'fantastic' and incidentally mentioned the band's 'great hair and faces', before showcasing their blistering rock 'n' roll tune, 'Lose Control'.

The Pablos - EP Reviews

"This debut three-tracker from this Leeds-based four-piece is a swaggering, bluster-filled shot of adrenalized garage blues" 8/10 - Chris Nosnibor, whisperinandhollerin

"This is the sort of musicianship that makes other musicians sit up and pay attention. Very rarely does a band excite a music reviewer this much. People need to hear this! It must be shared! These guys really need to be famous, three songs are enough for me to say that this is Grade A classic rock right here." Kevin, Power of Pop

"The Pablos from Leeds are unashamedly retro, mining the sound of garage and psychedelia from the 60s, but investing so much life into the songs that they're more than just resurrection men. A great take on a fantastic sound, this is a single full of garage goodness." Ged M, SoundsXP

ARTIBELLA:

are a six-piece band based in Leeds and London. Between them they sing, play trombone, guitar, bass, drums, violin, ukulele, melodica, harmonica and spoons. Their music is influenced by ska, folk, funk and indie. They have played at venues such as the Brudenell Social Club and the Faversham in Leeds, and recently supported King Charles and Tiffany Page. The band have received airplay and acclaim on BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Radio Leeds, and BBC Radio West Yorkshire.

A sample live review:
"They really work the crowd with their short, optimistic, rhythm-driven songs that feel like a melting pot... Artibella made converts of everyone and went down a storm" - Leeds Music Scene

BBC review:

"It really hit the mark with me. Nice stuff" - BBC Radio Bristol Introducing
