Leeds College of Music is proud to present Charles McPherson, one of the greatest all-time jazz alto saxophonists. This concert is a rare and golden opportunity to hear one of the last genuine, authentic jazz virtuosos playing his own compositions and arrangements, with his preferred quartet when touring in Europe.
McPherson was a member of the Mingus band for over 12 years, during the period in the 60s when it was at its height, and is a featured soloist on numerous classic recordings of that era. After Mingus he went on to lead groups comprising many of the leading names in jazz, including a long-term partnership with pianist Barry Harris. During the 90s he was featured on the soundtrack to Bird, the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic of Charlie Parker. A great deal of the soundtrack substitutes Parker for McPherson, and it is has been found impossible to tell them apart. More recent large-scale projects have been collaborations with the Lincoln Centre Orchestra in New York and Blue Note's star pianist Bill Charlap.
