Po' Girl is a Canadian group whose style derives from folk, country and jazz. The style of music they perform is called "urban roots." The interplay between Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Sidelinger, and Mikey "Lightning" August is truly something to behold.

CD Review: Fell City Girl - February Snow
The idea behind mentioning Sigur Ros in the first line of their bio, was probably a vague effort on the part of Fell City Girl's PR team to try and draw off the inevitable tide of comparisons heading their way.

CD Review: Ganglians - Candy Girl
The heady alt-pop of 'Candy Girl' has a naive, childish quality to it - probably because 90% of the instruments sound like they've been borrowed straight from the toybox.

Live Review: Po' Girl
This was another example of this excellent small venue in Otley punching well above its weight. Po' Girl, essentially a Canadian female duo with subtle rhythm accompaniment, last visited Otley around five or six years ago and, although lovely, engaging and good fun, seemed not quite the finished article in the opinion of this insignificant reviewer.

CD Review: Esteban - Just A Girl
Inspired by PLAN UK's 'Because I'm A Girl' campaign, self-styled 'desert-funk' four-piece Esteban release 'Just A Girl.' Billed as the "alternative Christmas single," 'Just A Girl' is a politically-charged, world-music infused, easy-on-the-ears musical meander, with a genuineness that means it's nowhere near as toe-curling as most charity singles.

If somebody told me that Mary Cook (a.k.a. We're Not The Cool Kids) lived an entirely solitary existence, away from anybody else's music or influence, I think I'd believe them, at least for a minute (that being the minute that someone informed me that there was a Springsteen cover on her EP).

CD Review: The Rosie Taylor Project - Black And White Films
It would be easy enough to dismiss 'Black And White Films' after a cursory listen. Boasting a gently plucked guitar line that trundles along for four minutes without really deviating, and lacking anything that could really lay claim to being a 'chorus', it's a tune that can pass you by as lightly and unobtrusively as a gentle breeze.

CD Review: Plasticines - Barcelona
If Ladyhawke has taught us anything, it's that girl-synth-rock is fit. And Plastiscines have not tried to hide the fact that their break-through single is in fact a complete cover of Ladyhawke's 'Paris Is Burning', where the word "Paris" has been cunningly substituted for "Barcelona." But I've found myself not particularly caring about this complete rip-off at all; 'Barcelona' is a great pop song that ticks all the necessary boxes.

You can't really diss Rolo Tomassi. In fairness, I've seen these guys struggle through hardcore shows, getting abuse from the scene kids because they're all about 14 (my old band played with them last year and they bought their GCSE revision books with them), but they've struggled on over the past year and finally honed their unusual brand of synth-spazzcore, so now their headlining shows and supporting HORSE the band and stuff.

'I Understand' from Eight Legs is a decent enough slice of NME-friendly indie that does nothing particularly wrong (although, its chorus of "what can this mean / thoughts tumble around in the washing machine" could become mildly annoying if overplayed.) CD Review: The Heartbreaks - Polly
I've been in this situation before. You meet a girl on holiday, instantly take a fancy to her, get talking and get to know each other on a personal level, share a kiss on the dancefloor, she's rattled with confusion and suddenly becomes indifferent, she realises (about three days later) that you're the one, comes back, you share the rest of your holiday together, she becomes the one, the holiday finishes, you're convinced you're going to marry her, she never gets in touch, you lose contact and end up spending the rest of your days in a black hole with only hazy memories of your secret trysts for comfort.

Every once in a while (and usually when you least expect it) you discover something special. A huge (but entirely selfish) part of you wants to keep it for yourself, assuming that if the rest of the world knew about it, that it would somehow get ruined.

Live Review: Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies + Pixies + The Subways + Infadels + Ali Whitton + The Black Velvets
Quickly cast aside as quite frankly preposterous any mistaken apprehension that the hushed rumours and tales whispering their way around the Red and Yellow campsites on Saturday morning were of Maiden's amazingly iconic 'Number Of The Beast', Bloc Party's 'Pioneers', aftershow craziness, or even, god forbid you little scamps, the prospect of going to the Aftershock Bar later to more-than-hopefully (with all fingers, toes and, ahem, everything crossed) catch a glimpse of a naked girl in the jacuzzi (not that you could see anything though, I did make it my duty to do a little research).

CD Review: The Vessels (London) - Don't waste your time
It always strikes me as funny as some bands find fame, fortune and celebrity girlfriend's easy to come by whilst others who provide music in a similar style and of equally, maybe greater, quality are only given recognition in the pages of magazines who employ journalists who actually know what they're on about rather than coke heads who want to look and sound cool, but invariably just sound like cocks.

CD Review: Carnabells - She's a Rollercoaster
These lads don't mess about! Within the first few bars of 'Station Road', the leading track of the EP, you are submerged into a full-on foot-tapping, indie-guitar led assault.

CD Review: Various Artists - Leeds Urban Fusion 2003
According to the liner notes here in the CD wallet of Leeds City Council's 'Urban Fusion 2003' album it says, rather cringingly, that this is a CD "born from hip hop, r&b and urban flavaz" although what 'urban flavaz' is meant to mean I have no idea.

CD Review: Röyksopp - Junior
Long considered as the thinking man's Norwegian electronic duo, Royksopp seem to have decided that beguiling soundscapes are so 2001, and this album seems to signal that (whisper it) R?opp have gone pop.

CD Review: Dancing Mice - Solferino
A couple of years ago I was handed this band's curious yet beguiling previous LP - 'Eroded.' Having re-read my thoughts on that offering (www.leedsmusicscene.net/article/9417) I can - for once - recall exactly what I liked about it.
