CD Review: Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames - Signal Noise
Already a mainstay and one of the most immediate and sublime highlights of Leeds' very own 10 legged, triple afro adorned post-punk 5 piece Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames' ever staggeringly good live shows, it's not a shock that 'Signal Noise' is the opening shot of what could be a very special musical journey indeed.

Live Review: Dartz! + Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames + Hot Club De Paris
Ah, the mighty Dance To The Radio night strikes again. Never a month goes past without another three bands more than worthy of headlining a show all by themselves being wheeled out and cast asunder to a crowd that in the most part aren't overly familiar with the talent on show but are more than willing to co-operate (or at least pensively listen) to what DTTR has to offer.

CD Review: The Defiled - 1888
'1888' is five tracks of hardcore-influenced metal. It's a fair assumption that this is what Bullet For My Valentine would have sounded like if, following 'The Poison,' they had explored the nastier, darker side of their sound, rather than written songs like 'Hearts Burst Into Fire.' The only thing separating The Defiled from an angrier BFMV, is their dabblings in electro and gothic synths, which jars against the straight-faced heaviness of their music.

CD Review: Everything We Left Behind - Pull Back And Go
The debut mini-album from Bristol-based four-piece Everything We Left Behind has a formula, and that formula is: take all the best features of pop-punk (the energy, exuberance and big, fat choruses,) while replacing all the worst features of pop-punk (the tenancy towards character-less over-production; the irritating over-chirpiness) with some actual punk characteristics, like you actually find in actual punk (and not, very often, in pop-punk.) So, album-opener 'Big Thanks To The Sun' features all the usual offenders of the pop-punk genre - springy drumbeats; "whoooooa" backing vocals; melodic-voiced frontman - wrapped up in a crackly production, with lashings of broken-glass riffing and a general roughness that pleasantly recalls local bands and live music.

CD Review: Various Artists - Showcase: West Yorkshire SXSW 2007
'This town is in disarray' claims the opening track from this sampler, but clearly not in a bad way. As an album it may suffer from being a hotchpotch of radically different offerings from local record labels, but I'd be surprised if any unwitting industry mogul - into whose hand this disc may have been thrust at the recent SXSW festival, and who actually took the time to give it a spin - failed to diagnose a clean bill of health for the current Leeds scene.

In all the years of being a fan this was the first time I saw Marc 'live'. I had seen former associates of his from Vicious Pink some time back.

CD Review: Flood Of Red - Leaving Everything Behind
'Leaving Everything Behind,' the debut album from Scotland's Flood Of Red, is a frustrating album. Effortlessly churning out dense, emotionally-charged, stadium-sized songs with towering choruses and heartfelt vocals aplenty, the first few songs will blow you away.

Featuring more breakdowns than the M1 and more stretchers than you could shake several sticks at, Ghostfest has once again descended upon the city of Leeds to lay waste to the University for the weekend; featuring a massive 32 bands spread over 2 days, there is, simply put, no better festival out there for fans of hardcore and metalcore.

Band Profile: Kasiuss
Kasiuss are not your average rock band. Combining epic piano and classical chord movements with feel good and sometimes raw and aggressive guitar riffs, poignant lyrics, dynamic builds and catchy chorus', the Kasiuss 'sound' is one that can be hard to define.

CD Review: Alestorm - Black Sails At Midnight
'Black Sails At Midnight' is one of those rare albums that'll leave you wondering "why has no-one tried this before?" Scottish four piece Alestorm take the gimmicky-but-actually-pretty-fun battle metal formula popularised by European metal bands such as Turisas, and replace references to Odin and Vikings with tales of quests, treasure and wenches.

CD Review: Various Artists - NME The Album 2009
The press release that accompanies this two disco compilation gives NME the moniker of "the pioneers of all things cool" before promising us an album that "has its finger on the pulse, so you don't have to!" It couldn't possibly be any clearer that this is an album for people who see a band on the front cover of NME, and then spend the next week enthusing about the greatness of said band, regardless of whether they like them or not.
