They're from Wales. And damn proud of it, it would seem. Novello come from the label 'Dragonffli' ("spelt the Welsh way") and are purveyors of catchy, sometimes dark, atmospheric rock music, but without the cheese of similar rock bands, or the pointless whinging of most emo bands, which they maybe sound quite similar too.

A last-minute change of plan means that I'm reviewing this gig rather than your usual correspondent. And the fact that bus timetables are a rough guide rather than an actual indication of when your bus might arrive mean that by the time I'm inside a packed venue with de-misted spectacles and thawed ears (my, it was cold at that bus stop), Piskie Sits are well into their stride.

With a name like Lindy you might be conjuring up mental images of a 16 year-old girl wielding an acoustic guitar and a few teen ballads, but actually it's Icelandic in origin and belongs to a 10 foot tall blonde bloke from Canada, still wielding a guitar but thankfully minus the ballads.

CD Review: Kill Cassidy - 14:11 / Everyone To The Dancemat
This double A-side single is a competent and well-executed double-whammy of alt-rock, rounded off with an easy-on-the-ears shimmer, and complete with a vocalist who can hit some sweet high notes - when he isn't pushing himself too hard.

CD Review: Chickenhawk - Chickenhawk
Chickenhawk's debut long-player is an ambitious and heroic montage of many different types of metal. Crunching riffs swing themselves between battering rhythms and off-kilter tempo changes, and are often interspersed with throat-destroying vocal theatrics and glitches of weird electronica.

It doesn't seem like yesterday that I reviewed and interviewed four guys for Mean Fiddler. Riotous exhibitionists, yet the nicest guys you're ever going to meet out behind the scenes, they were out on a day trip to prop up the Saturday morning third-stage festivities at Leeds Festival, and the 'Fiddler, whatever their reasons, didn't publish any of it.

CD Review: Red Star - Law And Order
'Law And Order,' the debut album from Huddersfield's Red Star, kicks off with 'Northerners (In London Town).' This piece of low-key, laidback indie grooviness relies mainly on a strong vocal performance from frontman Will Bloy and some simple electro beats that add that extra oomph to the chorus.

Ah the theremin. Not since 'Good Vibrations' have I heard such magnificent use of the instrument. Opening track on this four track EP, and aptly enough the title track, 'Dandelion' thumps along with its array of kitsch 1960s instruments, its sleazy guitar riff and its myriad of churning organs, booming drums and a vocalist that sounds suspiciously like Jason Pierce.

One thing I can never fathom about O Fracas is whether they're creative geniuses, or really rubbish. Beatsteaks' 'Limbo Messiah' is a difficult album to categorise. Opening on a decidedly dark note before flirting with a funkier, quasi-reggae sound, and finally unleashing the hard rocking, hard partying good times with a closing trio of straight-up, fun-loving rock and roll tracks, it also has the disorientating tendency to take hardcore-influenced elements such as gnashing vocals and bristling riffs, and fashion them into hooky rhythms.

How influential were Alice in Chains? Maybe not as influential as their nineties grunge peers Nirvana, maybe not as highly touted as their glum superstar friends Soundgarden, but if you step back and look at the crop of bands that are now doing a piss poor impression of one of the heavier, yet more diverse Seattle bands from the grunge explosion, you'll realise how that most of these bands (Godsmack to name the most blatant copyists, even taking their name from a song from "Dirt") were losing themselves in the misery that was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90's, 1992's "Dirt", rather than jumping around and trying to craft three chords into sub-Nirvana anthems.

Papa Roach continue their mission to distance themselves from their dodgy nu-metal past, with acoustic EP 'Naked And Fearless.' Firstly, I'm not entirely sure three tracks - one of which is an acoustic version of recently-released single 'Lifeline' - qualifies as an EP (surely, it's more of a long single?) and, secondly, once you take away the big, brash guitars, there's really not an awful lot left of Papa Roach.

Papa Roach continue their mission to distance themselves from their dodgy nu-metal past, with acoustic EP 'Naked And Fearless.' Live Review: The Humour + Vicious Cabaret
Parting company with one's musical tastes takes a lot in today's tightly packed music world, but the styles of Vicious Cabaret and The Humour are two bands not of the norm and can hold their heads up high among the rest of the Arctic Monkey wannabies out there as they challenged listeners at The Mixing Tin in Leeds to a different style of music.

CD Review: The Blackout - The Blackout! The Blackout! The Blackout!
The Blackout have never claimed to be reinventing the wheel. Most of the criticism levelled at the valley boys are usually due to their lack of originality.

Live Review: Hope of the States
A band are generally on to a good thing if people leave the venue after their set in tears. OK, so sometimes a band might be just too damn scary and terrify young children into weeping.

CD Review: Alberta Cross - Broken Side Of Time
In this, their debut album, Alberta Cross have held nothing back; not ashamed to plough straight in with full and heavy bulldozer guitars that compete for dominance over one another, creating complex and thick layers of sound.

CD Review: The Dead Formats - The Dead Formats
The overriding characteristic of The Dead Formats' debut EP, is the complex and seemingly random use of main, backing and gang vocals, which gives each song on this six track EP a sloppy, oldschool punk vibe feel that's refreshing amongst the current trend for studio gloss.
