CD Review: Chickenhawk - Chickenhawk
Chickenhawk's debut long-player is an ambitious and heroic montage of many different types of metal. Crunching riffs swing themselves between battering rhythms and off-kilter tempo changes, and are often interspersed with throat-destroying vocal theatrics and glitches of weird electronica.

Alternative. Alternative is a term used so often today that it begins to lose all meaning, but when I came across this track it was like it had become crystal, because that's exactly what this Leeds 6-piece are. Garon Shark are a young rock'n'roll four-piece from Huddersfield (what is it with that town?) Following hot on the heels of their 'Climb On My Back' single, The Silent Years release 'Taking Drugs At The Amusement Park.' Sadly, where 'Climb On My Back' combined a luxuriant indie-rock haze and simmering riffs to intriguing effect, the first thing you'll notice about 'Taking Drugs At The Amusement Park,' is how flat the chorus is.

CD Review: Thursday - Common Existence
'Common Existence,' the fifth full length offering from post-hardcore pioneers Thursday, kicks off in the best possible fashion, with impassioned anthem 'Resuscitation of a Dead Man.' This album-opener delivers a shot of abrasive noise, threaded through with long, grinding chords and black-hearted synths.

CD Review: The Black Box Revelation - Set Your Head On Fire
The debut album from Brussels' The Black Box Revelation kicks off with the sleazy rock and roll of 'Love, Love Is On My Mind.' Erratic drumbeats, jerky riffs and Jan Paternoster's all-over-the-place vocals give this album-opener the sort of vibrant-but-ramshackle energy you'd expect from a live performance.

Classic 70s/80s Rock sounds different from each side of the guitar. When your foot's on the monitor speaker those ringing power chords, the thrill of that stereo effect double lead solo, the surge of the harmonies and the deep judder of the rhythm section feel like the power to take over the world, if not a small section of the universe.

Like six post-metal Viking Kings wandering in search of their riff Valhalla, Seven Nautical Miles' debut album is a densely layered, dark and brooding affair in the tradition of all great epic post-metal bands - namely, that crushingly heavy, glacial guitars are interspersed with delicate light arpeggios that glimmer like the aurora borealis (ok, enough Viking/Scandinavian clichés).

Live Review: Ghosts in the Nightclub + The Troubadors + Silverlode + Frankie Eisenhower
I missed Miranda Arieh tonight and I have no excuse for it, sorry. But I stumbled in eventually and had the pleasure of seeing Frankie Eisenhower.

CD Review: Rollerball - Untitled
I was slightly nervy before reviewing this CD; the reason being that I'd heard a number of people comment adversely on it - at first I could see what they meant; but the more I've listened to it the more it has developed.

Live Review: The Xenith Sound + Milf + Nex
The basement of the Royal Park pub is pretty empty as Nex take the stage, but it quickly fills up once the reverberations can be felt through the floor upstairs.

CD Review: Runaround Kids - Kiss Chase
The first professional release from Wakefield's Runaround Kids takes a little while to get going, thanks to unnecessary 'introductory' song 'Kiss Chase.' The spine-tingling atmospherics and frontman George Garthwaite's distant, crackling vocals make this sound bizarrely like the soundtrack to an episode of flash-in-the-pan online cartoon sensation Salad Fingers, which makes for um, interesting listening.

Live Review: The Bluetones
On entering The Cockpit the support band (M.A.S.S I believe) are nearing the end of their set, after a brief listen we decide to stay in the bar and prepare to jostle for a position near the front of a packed crowd.
