Johnny Foreigner are a strange band in that they have consistently got great reviews including a 10/10 for their debut EP 'Arcs Across The City' on Drowned For Sound and an 8/10 for this their debut album from NME, yet they still remain an unknown quantity outside of their hardcore followers and have received little hype compared to what a lot of other new bands have.

CD Review: The Hours - See The Light
"Ok lads, we've all had a few drinks, let's not do anything you're gonna regret in the morning, yes, those lyrics you've written on the back of the beer mat are uplifting in an, it'll be ok, the lights in all of us, the sun's gonna shine, vaguely spiritual kind of way and the music has an epic sweep and grandeur without there actually being any hint of a tune or melody in there, but really, do you want to turn over in the morning and find out you've brought home something sounding like the Verve on a bad day, that is, really bad, and yes it does kind of sound like something that Match of the Day might have rejected in favour of U2's It's a Beautiful Day but put the guitars down and walk away, let's all go home, remember to drink plenty of water, get some rest and think about what's happened here today".

CD Review: Dead Confederate - The Rat
As a precursor to their debut full-length, psych-rock five piece Dead Confederate release the jet-black trudge of 'The Rat.' While there's a definite trippiness to frontman Hardy Morris' hazy vocal lines, and the occasional, glimmery chord rises from the gloom of the rest of the song; beyond that, 'The Rat' is a song of hopeless, bleak beauty.

Band Profile: A Cuckoo
A Cuckoo creates a dusty and nostalgic blend of acoustic based esoteric poetry. Songs of love and light weave in and out of musical paintings that are delicately splashed with the auburn colours of strings, the oak texture of acoustic guitars, the glistening silvers of music boxes and glockenspiels, subtle golden tints of bells, the vermilion and sepia sound of melotrons and vibraphones and the gentle breeze that is A Cuckoo's voice.

CD Review: Various Artists - Paul Marshall / Tascam Tapes - split single
A couple of names lately added to the ranks of Leeds acoustic singer-songwriterdom. The whole thing - quite deliberately a disc of two halves - begins with Paul Marshall's songs following a bass-and-snare drumbeat that gives way to some pleasing guitar-picking in a slightly hasty style for 'Oh Napoleon'.

CD Review: Plasticines - Barcelona
If Ladyhawke has taught us anything, it's that girl-synth-rock is fit. And Plastiscines have not tried to hide the fact that their break-through single is in fact a complete cover of Ladyhawke's 'Paris Is Burning', where the word "Paris" has been cunningly substituted for "Barcelona." But I've found myself not particularly caring about this complete rip-off at all; 'Barcelona' is a great pop song that ticks all the necessary boxes.

CD Review: Electric Eel Shock - Transworld Ultra Rock
Dispensing with the need to be ironic or clever, having English as a second language is perfect for fists in the air rock, as Ozzy has consistently shown. Indeed Black Sabbath have been one of Electric Eel Shock's main influences along with a host of other 80's rock luminaries. It's a style accurately described by their own press as 'fashion proof' and you'd have to agree there's very little here that would identify it as a record made in 2007.

CD Review: Innerpartysystem - Heart of Fire
Following their recent profile boost, thanks to the success of re-released single 'Don't Stop,' Innerpartysystem release this six-track EP 'Heart of Fire.' Title track 'Heart of Fire' lays a veneer of glitches and light-electro synths over dark, reverberating riffs, before launching into a thumping, drum-heavy chorus and hook-packed pop vocals.

CD Review: Seven Nautical Miles - Every Ocean Reversed
Like six post-metal Viking Kings wandering in search of their riff Valhalla, Seven Nautical Miles' debut album is a densely layered, dark and brooding affair in the tradition of all great epic post-metal bands - namely, that crushingly heavy, glacial guitars are interspersed with delicate light arpeggios that glimmer like the aurora borealis (ok, enough Viking/Scandinavian clichés).

The tongue twisting M83 are named after a Spiral Galaxy in a star-system far, far away. Now on their third album, they sound as grandiose as their inter-galactic moniker, merging rock, dance, instrumental mayhem and anything else they can find in the cosmic bargain bin.

It's safe to say this record has been a long time coming. Bands coming out of Bristol seem to suffer from a heightened expectation. The hand-me-down shoes of the Trip Hop and Indie Dance legends are big ones to fill, but The Fauns have an ace up their sleeve: not satisfied in merely being from the same part of the country, they went so far as to get Portishead producer/instrumentalist Geoff Barrow involved in the project, albeit only in a mentoring role.

CD Review: Wildbirds & Peacedrums - The Snake
After releasing their debut album, 'Heartcore,' through Yorkshire's own The Leaf Label to widespread acclaim in 2007, Swedish husband-and-wife duo Mariam Wallentin and Andreas Werliin jumped straight in at the deep end with a follow up the next year. Their sound is raw, primitive; there is nothing of The White Stripes here. Maintaining the stripped-down feel of 'Heartcore,' second album 'The Snake' builds evermore layers of complexity onto the basic vocals and percussion set-up, bringing in glockenspiel, marimba, flute and hosts of other tinkling, twinkling other-worldly sounds. The landscape of 'The Snake' is a frenetic and turbulent one, with Wallentin's vocals meandering deftly through a veritable helter-skelter of styles and octaves; one moment her voice is as deep and powerful as Nina Simone's or a jazzier PJ Harvey; the next, it takes on a fragile tone more akin to the fragile warbles of Anthony Hegarty or Baby Dee. All the while Werliin's 'peacedrums' are pounding rhythmically in the background, tribal and animalistic, as Wallentin guides us through their fairy tale wilderness. Live, they are a sight to behold, with shrieks and smashes melding together in a crashing chaos of complexity. First single 'There Is No Light' is a prime example of this controlled chaos; an anguished, churning mess of a song; but these raucous numbers are punctuated by slower, delicate tracks such as 'So Soft So Pink,' which sounds exactly as one would expect from the name, with soft drums and tinkling cymbal crashes built around vocals as understated and brittle as glass. Listening to the album, you get the impression that the vocals and drums are each telling their own, distinct stories throughout; stories which compliment and interlace with each other but which are individual narratives, each with their own directions.

CD Review: Just Handshakes (We're British) - Paper Cranes/Talking Pictures
First of all, the 'Paper Cranes/Talking Pictures' release comes wrapped in a bow, with an accompanying origami leaflet entitled 'Make Your Own Paper Crane' which pretty much sums up the intimate, small-scale feel of Just Handshakes (We're British)'s double A side release.

CD Review: The Unfortunate Incident - Build Your Own Arc
It is easy to presume that these hyped Sheffield scenesters are just going to be Fall Out Boy/My Chemical Romance wannabes; trying to fall into that radio-friendly rock-pop-punk genre so popular with fifteen year old girls who have come to realise that Avril Lavigne is balls.

Live Review: Lunchtime Disco Club + Kanyose + L-Mo + Pilla
Opening tonight's proceedings in a serene and candid fashion are acoustic two piece, Pilla. The hushed male and female vocal dynamics demand the entire crowd's attention in Hi Fi and they are given a warming performance of laid bare folk numbers with more than a nod towards the poppier end of the folk spectrum, along the lines of Stephen Fretwell perhaps.
