Live Review: The Gaslight Anthem
Due to the downright insane line for shuttle bus tickets at Leeds bus station (you have to feel for the single pensioner, who is stranded in the middle of the shuttle bus queue, looking completely confused and, presumably, not festival-bound at all) I arrive just in time to hear Leeds' Penguin announce this has been the best gig of their life, before leaving the stage.

Despite what the trendy music press may tell you kids, punk's not dead. The fact that I don't think I've ever seen the Fenton this busy is good testament to the fact that there's plenty of people who still believe in angry music that has something to say (and sorry Blink 182/New Found Glory fans but "having something to say" does not equate to 33-year-olds pretending to be 15.

CD Review: Suicide Silence - The Black Crown
With more aggression than a Rottweiler on steroids, Suicide Silence haven't toned down their deathcore bludgeon in their time away from the fray; however, what they have done is fine-tuned it, giving it more qualities than just the straight-up brutality which was seen on their debut album, 'The Cleansing.' Being truthful, this is a release which is likely to alienate some of their older fans; Suicide Silence are an almost entirely different sounding band from the one which emerged four or five years ago.

CD Review: Depth - Situation Fulfilled
When Norwich quartet, 'Depth', start their debut album with 'Built By One', a listener might develop a sense of indifference to the band- this is perfectly competent post-hardcore, but nowhere in its 3 minutes and 47 seconds running time does it really challenge the genre boundaries, and in a scene as over saturated as the one they occupy, a band must be able to offer something more substantial than 'satisfactory' if they are to stand out from the pack.

CD Review: Arch Enemy - Khaos Legions
Arch Enemy have really raised their game on this release. Following some 4 years on from the release of 'Rise of the Tyrant', there was undoubtedly much pressure on the band to deliver the goods; it is, therefore, a huge relief to find out that Arch Enemy haven't toned down their approach, but instead have released an album which not only packs more punch than a heavyweight boxer, but retains the unmistakable sound that Arch Enemy have been perfecting for a decade and a half.

The Cortinas 'MK.1' is the latest release from Bristol Archive Records who specialise in local bands from the mid-70's onwards, "as a vehicle to talk about and remember Bristol's forgotten stars, those people that should have, could have or probably had no chance of fame and Global domination." For a band signed to Kitsune I was surprised to see just how many guitars were being lined up at side stage; most of my experience with Two Door Cinema Club is based on floods of remixes, and their album ploughs with a kind of mechanical relentlessness, which is possibly a ridiculous way of saying they might have used electronic drum sounds.

CD Review: Coldplay - Mylo Xyloto
I like Coldplay. Hardly a ringing endorsement, I know, but 2005's bloated and bland X&Y aside, I've never quite understood the levels of criticism constantly aimed their way.

CD Review: March of Dimes - All Intents and Purposes
'All Intents And Purposes,' the debut full-length from March of Dimes, opens with the decidedly low-key, acoustic rattle of 'If We Only Had One Day.' The under produced edge gives 'If We Only Had...' an intimate, country feel that perfectly complements lyrics that don't always take the obvious route.

It's gutting to see that The Well is, at best, half full for tonight, not just because this show features 5 of the best up-and-coming heavy bands the UK has to offer, but because all this available to you for a mere six pounds.

Live Review: Sky Larkin + Mother Vulpine + The Acutes
The primary reason for the great and the good of Leeds society piling into the cosy Faversham this Thursday night was the chance to honour our local up-and-coming pop heroes, Sky Larkin, and the launch of their debut 7" ('One of Two' on DTTR records - available in all credible outlets now, pop pickers!) Prior to this brooding slice of indie perfection, however, we had a couple of other outfits to draw us in the direction of the Fav's intimate stage.

CD Review: Katatonia - Night Is The New Day
Although the phrase 'symphonic, atmospheric doom-metal' may conjure up visions of ten minute long, utterly thankless, glum-faced instrumentals, the eighth full-length offering from Swedish doom-metallers Katatonia administer eleven shots of compact, melodic doom-metal that bucks the genre's trend for self-indulgence.

I was supposed to be going to Josephs Well tonight to see Brody, Sugarvalve and Catylyst. Unfortunately they cancelled, so I rang my friends and said, hey no problem I'm definitely coming to see you guys now, only to check the discussion board and see that it had been rearranged at Royal Park and was going ahead as planned aaaahhhhhh!!!

'Always Looking Forward' is a hit and miss affair; the times when The Hostiles' riotous blend of ska, punk and cartoonish vocals doesn't quite fit together right, easily outnumber the times when it does.
