Bands coming out of Bristol seem to suffer from a heightened expectation. The hand-me-down shoes of the Trip Hop and Indie Dance legends are big ones to fill, but The Fauns have an ace up their sleeve: not satisfied in merely being from the same part of the country, they went so far as to get Portishead producer/instrumentalist Geoff Barrow involved in the project, albeit only in a mentoring role.

"I can't believe I just said that; why did I say that?", Fyfe sniggers after wryly introducing the two rather elegant violinists at his side as "my bitches." There is a real sense of fun and unity with the band, the guys are obviously close and like each others company. All the way through there was jibes and giggles and chat outside of the questions. The Hair make me want to do reasonably mucky things to people. I think. I'm not sure. Either that or maybe find a partner to relive certain aspects of 'Dirty Dancing' with right there and then on the shiny wooden floorboards of The Faversham, except we'd incorporate more modern and perhaps more subtle dance moves whilst substituting those items of footwear now relegated to the depths of a chiropodist's hell with slightly more comfortable shoes.

Live Review: Sky Larkin + Mother Vulpine + The Acutes
The primary reason for the great and the good of Leeds society piling into the cosy Faversham this Thursday night was the chance to honour our local up-and-coming pop heroes, Sky Larkin, and the launch of their debut 7" ('One of Two' on DTTR records - available in all credible outlets now, pop pickers!) Prior to this brooding slice of indie perfection, however, we had a couple of other outfits to draw us in the direction of the Fav's intimate stage.

A certain indescribable atmosphere surrounds Brudenell Social Club. I know I've just made an obvious statement; in fact you'll probably be thinking: 'What's this guy talking about?' and 'Is this guy going to review Local Natives or just the venue?' But I think everyone who's ever been to Brudenell and seen a band play on that stage will agree.

The annual Bright Young Things showcase has been very much like a 'Kinder Surprise' over the last few years - yes you may look back fondly enough, but you'd rather have a 'Fizzy Cola Bottle' (Futuresound competition) or even a 'Flying Saucer' (local band nite at Joseph's Well) because, at the end of the day, while the 'Kinder Egg' promises much, open it up and a crappy toy that you play with for five minutes and then lose down the back of the sofa is all that confronts you.

CD Review: Various Artists - Kerrang! The Album '09
The genius of the annual Kerrang! compilation is that, like the Kerrang!-sponsored Download festival, if you're an avid reader of said magazine, then chances are you're already familiar with every last band on this mammoth forty-two track compilation, even the acts being billed as 'ones to watch out for.' Spanning two CDs, it's conveniently split into mainstream-bothering punk and rock songs on the first CD, and metal and heavy rock on the second.
