CD Review: AB Negative - The Upper Crust
With the likes of Dumb 41 and Blink 18Poo cluttering the air waves with their supposed comical take on punk rock, I was initially worried about listening to a CD by a punk band who had previously released an EP titled "Moshy Peas." Thankfully "The Upper Crust" is a musical dictionary of the various types of punk that are available to the people of the world.

Live Review: (Spunge) + Bowling For Soup + Gash
Birmingham's Gash play a storming set of Ataris-influened punk, without songs about girls. The crowd lap it up, and they set the stage perfectly for Americans Bowling For Soup, who, although playing for too long, fill their set with brilliant pop-punk tunes and comedic between-song banter.

CD Review: Outl4w - Get in the Van
Just because they're kids with guitars, don't expect Outl4w to be in the same mould as McFly/Busted. You won't find any watered down rock for the teeny-bop masses on this album.

CD Review: All Time Low - Nothing Personal

CD Review: Everything We Left Behind - Pull Back And Go
The debut mini-album from Bristol-based four-piece Everything We Left Behind has a formula, and that formula is: take all the best features of pop-punk (the energy, exuberance and big, fat choruses,) while replacing all the worst features of pop-punk (the tenancy towards character-less over-production; the irritating over-chirpiness) with some actual punk characteristics, like you actually find in actual punk (and not, very often, in pop-punk.) So, album-opener 'Big Thanks To The Sun' features all the usual offenders of the pop-punk genre - springy drumbeats; "whoooooa" backing vocals; melodic-voiced frontman - wrapped up in a crackly production, with lashings of broken-glass riffing and a general roughness that pleasantly recalls local bands and live music.

CD Review: We Start Fires - Caught Redhanded
Mathematics aside this is a valiant effort from this US grrrl-punk scene influenced quartet. Underneath the guitars and quirky 80s' keyboard effects of this album lies a fair dose of pop-punk fused with the daily trials and tribulations of your average young rock and roll girl.

CD Review: My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
The inner movie style sleeve of this album describes it as "The story of a Man. A Woman. And the corpses of a thousand evil men..." This is punk rock with a dark side and ever present gothic undertones with passionate and often anguished lyrics focusing around death and heartache ("say goodnight to the heart you break and all the cyanide you drank..." from 'To The End').

CD Review: All Time Low - So Wrong It's Right

CD Review: The KBC - Pride Before the Fall
Dance-punk... it's one of those catch-all, media type short-term genres isn't it? You know the score: don't bother with giving some thought to the task you've been set, just dig out some old Shed Seven b-sides (don't get dewy eyed on me now), add a bit of hissing hi-hat and a dollop of white funk bass and the indie disco is your empire.

What I know about ska could probably be written on the back of a stamp. In fact it would be a waste of space to write it on the back of a stamp, because other than The Specials (how obvious was it that I was going to mention them, eh?) and a few more up-to-date American bands who do that ska-punk thing I have to admit it isn't something I've ever spent any time listening to.

Live Review: thisGirl
Having got a support slot with this band, this was a perfect chance to check them out. The band play punk metal type stuff with mellow bits in between - a bit like Lost Prophets but not quite as heavy.

CD Review: Witch - Paralyzed
Having J Mascis at the helm may bring illusions of driving guitars, messily fighting with themselves, but here he has returned to his first instrument, the drums, along with Dave Sweetapple (bass), and Kyle Thomas of feathers to create a sound far removed from anything they are well known for.

CD Review: A - Something's Going On
When the Britpop phenomenon began to die, a drunken conversation at the Good Mixer in the over-hyped Camden Town resulted in the legendary birth of Britrock; a few bands were located for championing in the NME and a few more emerged from the woodwork.

Live Review: The Misfits + Osaka Popstar
Nights like this, usually, are all about nostalgia. The Misfits are the long-standing torch bearers of a Goth-punk scene that has all but left them behind, younger, hungrier bands such as Alkaline Trio and My Chemical Romance taking Goth to new places and heights that could only be dreamt about back in the day.

CD Review: The Thermals - The Body The Blood The Machine
When they recorded their first album on a beat up old four-track in a local hotel room, Portland trio The Thermals and their label Sub Pop boldly stuck two fingers up to the industry and said "look we can have a hit record even with out all the expensive tweaks." Quite right too, More Parts Per Million went on to be an underground smash if there is such a thing and the tinny production only added to its joy.
