CD Review: The Pigeon Detectives - Untitled
The Pigeon Detectives are one of the most entertaining live bands around Leeds at the moment. On stage their frantic and furious frontman belts out shambolic rock 'n' roll gems like there's no tomorrow, often threatening to decapitate one of the band's guitarists as he throws his mic stand, microphone and himself around the stage in an uncontrolled fit of pleasure.

CD Review: Naked Flames - Animal Love
To say this is a comedy-metal record, I didn't find anything particularly funny or metal about Naked Flames' new album, okay so there a few bits that made me chuckle and brought a smile to my face but I'm quite miserable as it is so it really wasn't enough to keep my attention throughout.

Live Review: (Spunge) + Bowling For Soup + Gash
Birmingham's Gash play a storming set of Ataris-influened punk, without songs about girls. The crowd lap it up, and they set the stage perfectly for Americans Bowling For Soup, who, although playing for too long, fill their set with brilliant pop-punk tunes and comedic between-song banter.

Nights like this, usually, are all about nostalgia. CD Review: Liam Frost - Show Me How The Spectres Dance
At only 22 years old, Manchester's Liam Frost, with the accompaniment of The Slowdown Family, has received enormous praise for his brooding and thoughtful brand of acoustic-folk-indie, likened to Badly Drawn Boy, and hailed by some as Britain's answer to Bright Eyes.

CD Review: Decoration - I tried it, I liked it, I loved it
John Peel loves them and he's not the only one! This 3 track follow up to the astonishingly good "Thomas Pink Session" is another warning shot across the bows of the music listening public - whistling past with the words "you will adore us" ringing in the ears of all those who dare get in their way.

Live Review: Herman Dune
I think the year was 2001 when I turned on the radio and heard the late John Peel introduce a Paris-based Swiss/Swedish trio of David, Andre and Neman Herman Dune singing songs such as "How Things Slide" and "Lazy Boys (Don't Stand A Chance)" Five years later, after not listening to Herman Dune for a while I was happy to hear that they would be playing a gig at the Brudenell Social Club.

My first gig of 2003 and in the dreaded month of January, the skint month, the after payday month, the "gigs are low priority on my spending list" month - but no, what's this, "you'll have to squeeze in at the back"; "you can stand on the chairs if you want"; "I'm not going to the bar again, it was murder" for tonight The Primrose is packed for its first gig of the year and the first gig ever for The Cat Pack all 19+ of them.

It's time for bleeding the money cow dry again, with The Wonder Stuff back in the game. There's the cheeky Miles Hunt, the rocker Malcolm Treece, quiet bassist Mark McCarthy, and drummer Andres Karu hidden behind excellent fiddle player Erica Nockalls, who has good posture and is probably classically trained.

Two-years since his last release, 'Ringer,' experimental electro genius Four Tet is back with his seventh studio album 'There Is Love In You.' CD Review: Paul Marshall - Vultures
More often than not, folk records come with a seasonal mood in mind, though in the case of Paul Marshall and his debut album 'Vultures' we have a record which seems to encapsulate all four seasons - equally as fitting for a frosty February morning as it is for a sun-drenched afternoon in July.

The debut album from Brussels' The Black Box Revelation kicks off with the sleazy rock and roll of 'Love, Love Is On My Mind.' CD Review: The New Amsterdams - Story Like a Scar
Story like a Scar opens with two undeniably perfect tracks defining the album genre as mellow folk. The New Amsterdams incorporate country-style instruments such as a harmonica, banjo and stand-up bass for a brilliant effect.

CD Review: Goons of Doom - For A Girl
This is the first single from the Goons' second album 'I Hate My Hair And Want To Die', which carries on their very stripped back, garage band esq.

Live Review: Parisman + The Pyschedelic Breakfast + Cheer Up Mungo Hump and the Daddy Special
Mungo Hump sounded as proficient as they did interesting as they blasted through their first two songs but the set averaged out from that point onwards.

Live Review: Kate Rusby
Go to a folk gig... what is that about? Well, I've been into Kate Rusby's music since I got her excellent album "10" as a present from a discerning music lover.

CD Review: Pollen - Lonely In The Crowd
I get hayfever. Real bad, sometimes. But this particular strain of Pollen is infectious and debilitating in the best possible way - it will make you 1) sing (uncontrollably and loudly) and 2) stand there in shock unable to do a thing except sniff, your eyes watering, but for an entirely different reason to that large and inconsiderate yellow field a few streets away.

Live Review: Mover
Three long years I've been waiting!!! Finally Mover are back in town... hurrah!! I had never heard of the band before I saw them support The Bluetones in 1998 at the T&C but they completely blew me away.

CD Review: Semifinalists - s/t
No two ways about it. This is a purely beautiful debut album. Semifinalists have managed to condense hours of sweeping, emotional epic music all the way down into 3 minute wedges of charming pop music.

CD Review: Jack Butler - Velvet Prose
The acapella intro of 'Velvet Prose' and immediate ska-like upbeat tempo make you want to keep listening to this song and quite right too because this is very, very good.

Down at the Well on a Sunday is a relaxing end to one of the maddest weeks, and in such context I review this gig.

Live Review: Parva + The Union Volts + Being 747
Would putting rock bands in a massive hole work? With a crowd made-up of mostly of people wanting to be seen and grab the free booze, it was a triumph for the bands for so many to be grabbed from the bar by the quality of the music.

CD Review: Portabello - Once Around The Sun
Portabello are a professional bunch. This CD is well produced, looks good and is being pushed through major retail chains nationwide from an independent base without using the usual distributors.

Live Review: The Whip + The Hair + Rochelle
I arrived early to make sure we caught indie-electro Leeds band The Hair - when they came onstage the room that was empty just 15 minutes before was now full.

CD Review: The Dharma - Can You Rely On Them
Upon receiving this CD, I thought - 'Looks promising, very slick. Maybe a better photographer could have made the live looking cover shot look a little less like they are performing at an open jam night to an empty pub.' 'Can You Rely On Them' is a tune that upon first listen seems to pull no punches, upon second or more listens you will be thinking 'what the hell is going on with these guys.' It is filled with lots of quirky little solos, which do showcase a lot of musical talent that is there, somewhere!

Live Review: Sketches + Fourteen Corners + The Dead Certs
It's the second of the Futuresound heats, and what I manage to catch of The Dead Certs' set is sadly quite brief, as I arrive at the Cockpit a little later than planned.

CD Review: Jewel - 0304
On first hearing that Jewel had recorded a Pop album it seemed a strange move. This down to earth, cowboy dating, sensitive poet ditching her acoustic guitar in favour of a beat box?

CD Review: Pushbike Army - Four From Alexandra Grove
Music, like life, can be a dispiriting place at times. No sooner are ideals espoused than one sees them tarnished by those whom one supposed to be their champions.

Live Review: Pulled Apart by Horses + Emily Levy & Rich Arthurs + Bill Lawrence + Big Wave + Winter North Atlantic + Grammatics + Peter Wright + The Seal Cub Clubbing Club + Dr Butler's Hatstand Medicine Band + Fuse[d]
There are countless laudable aspects of the weekend that will have been taken away by all of the festival-goers, but arguably it's Moor Music Festival's inclusive eclecticism that deserves the biggest pat on the back.
