CD Review: The Sweet Chap - Superman 3 / Girl With A Curl

CD Review: The Vessels (London) - Don't waste your time
It always strikes me as funny as some bands find fame, fortune and celebrity girlfriend's easy to come by whilst others who provide music in a similar style and of equally, maybe greater, quality are only given recognition in the pages of magazines who employ journalists who actually know what they're on about rather than coke heads who want to look and sound cool, but invariably just sound like cocks.

Dance-punk... it's one of those catch-all, media type short-term genres isn't it? You know the score: don't bother with giving some thought to the task you've been set, just dig out some old Shed Seven b-sides (don't get dewy eyed on me now), add a bit of hissing hi-hat and a dollop of white funk bass and the indie disco is your empire.

CD Review: Luke Hirst - Rock n Roll Begins At Home
Bradford singer songwriter Luke Hirst specialises in the sort of no frills, pop-infused indie-rock songs that we don't seem to see much of anymore, what with 90% of popular acts either being a band, or a female solo artist (ala Lilly Allen, Amy Winehouse, Duffy etc.) Consequently, it's debatable whether Luke Hirst's new EP 'Rock n Roll Begins At Home' will find a ready audience, but that's no comment on its quality.

Not many people are here to watch Buzzkill; a real shame, as they give it their all. Unfortunately there is a problem with the saxophone, meaning we don't get to see Matt Perrot strut his stuff, and this leaves half a brass section by the name of Ben Whittington, who's trumpet can barely be heard except during his fiddly solos.

A pretty quiet start to the evening for a Saturday night in Leeds, and bloody cold too, so I was looking for something to warm my cockles.

My first port of call upon arriving at Leeds Festival 2012 was, without a doubt, going to be the Lock Up Stage; and what a better way to start the weekend than by melodic quartet Apologies, I Have None.

It's all just about to get a little bit Nasty. The great thing about dubbing yourself a 'festival of nu-wave' is that you pretty much have the leeway to put anything you want on the bill and slam the indiscriminate tag of 'nu-wave' atop and no-one will bat an eyelid.

CD Review: Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
It's been a constant source of wonder why there's been so much fuss made over the perfectly OK Glasvegas this year when another Scottish band released possibly the finest album of 2008 yet escaped the NME's and most everyone else's spotlight.

CD Review: Various Artists - NME The Album 2009
The press release that accompanies this two disco compilation gives NME the moniker of "the pioneers of all things cool" before promising us an album that "has its finger on the pulse, so you don't have to!" It couldn't possibly be any clearer that this is an album for people who see a band on the front cover of NME, and then spend the next week enthusing about the greatness of said band, regardless of whether they like them or not.

Live Review: Sam Airey + Fossil Collective + Fran Rodgers + Dancing Years
I'll give you a snapshot of my day on Saturday, last weekend. I took the dog for a 4 mile walk around Rodley, picked-up my first ever press-perk type wristband, went to my favourite hideaway (The Leeds Library) to snaffle my pack-up and lose myself in a book for an hour or so, headed to The Cockpit to catch some live music, nipped for a brew with the lovely Mrs Pickle, moseyed-on down to Trinity Church for some more live music, popped home to feed the pets, went back out to Brudenell Social Club for another portion of live music and then finished the night at The Wardrobe for a cherry-on-top serving of, yup, more live music.
