Infectious records indie darlings My Vitriol are not a band that have passed me by. I have taken note of their stylish videos on MTV2, I have paid attention when played by Steve Pac-a-mac and I have thought to myself, not for me at the minute, but maybe one day.

CD Review: Laconic - Untitled
Laconic acoustically strum their way to something that feels like an indie Dido meeting David Gray. All 3 tracks are Radio 2 friendly and with their un-complex moody folk verse and swooping pop chorus formula there's little deviation from that well walked middle of the road path.

A six-track mini LP by a Harrogate based band and a very pleasant surprise. CD Review: Japanese Voyeurs - Milk Teeth
'Milk Teeth' is one of the few singles where the B-side is every bit as good as the A-side. In fact, the racing punk of B-side 'Godzilla' could have been released as a single in its own right, which bodes well for their forthcoming full-length, 'Yolk.' A-side 'Milk Teeth' is one of the more musically experimental tracks Japanese Voyeurs have released, as they move away from the straight-up grunge of 'Dumb' and the conventional quiet/loud verse-chorus structure of 'That Love Sound.' 'Milk Teeth' takes the listener on a twisted journey through eerie lulls and sudden bursts of crunching guitar, before tipping them into a queasy chorus that'll make their flesh crawl.

CD Review: The KBC - Pride Before the Fall
Dance-punk... it's one of those catch-all, media type short-term genres isn't it? You know the score: don't bother with giving some thought to the task you've been set, just dig out some old Shed Seven b-sides (don't get dewy eyed on me now), add a bit of hissing hi-hat and a dollop of white funk bass and the indie disco is your empire.

90's band Terrorvision are back for a very short tour and this was the warm up to it. There were concerns beforehand about whether they'd cut it anymore, or whether they'll turn into that sad band trying to recapture past glories, but playing to ever smaller crowds until they end up at Butlins.

The upstairs room at the Cardigan Arms is a perfect place for an acoustic gig. With its small, dark room, the atmosphere is made even better by the dozen or so candles that are situated around the room, creating a very intimate feel to the whole place.

CD Review: Plasticines - Barcelona
If Ladyhawke has taught us anything, it's that girl-synth-rock is fit. And Plastiscines have not tried to hide the fact that their break-through single is in fact a complete cover of Ladyhawke's 'Paris Is Burning', where the word "Paris" has been cunningly substituted for "Barcelona." But I've found myself not particularly caring about this complete rip-off at all; 'Barcelona' is a great pop song that ticks all the necessary boxes.

CD Review: Fun. - Aim & Ignite
Fun. are like 'A Fever Your Can't Sweat Out'-era Panic! at the Disco, with a few more strings, gospel choirs and a vocalist who squeals out those big, dramatic high notes like his life depends on it.

The forth word on the press release for Goodluck Jonathan is 'Brighton'. For me, this has risen my expectations dramatically.

CD Review: Bat For Lashes - Haunted Man
The fancy dress costumes have been put away, and the haunting claustrophobia of Natasha Khan's previous albums Fur and Gold and Two Suns have been traded in for a sound that is cinematic in scope and mature in outlook.

CD Review: The Black Box Revelation - Set Your Head On Fire
The debut album from Brussels' The Black Box Revelation kicks off with the sleazy rock and roll of 'Love, Love Is On My Mind.' Erratic drumbeats, jerky riffs and Jan Paternoster's all-over-the-place vocals give this album-opener the sort of vibrant-but-ramshackle energy you'd expect from a live performance.

I tuned in to a recent "Later..." mainly to see Little Roy perform from the beautiful "Battle for Seattle" (another review, another time) and was only too happy for another act on the bill to catch my ear.

CD Review: Kidda - Hotel Radio
Simple pleasures make me instantly happy; the dog waking me up by licking my elbow to tell me it's time to let her out, the same dog finding her frisbee in the park (she's blind you know!), back to back episodes of Time Team, a brew made by somebody else, getting more correct answers than University Challenge contestants; they all rank highly in the instant smiles stakes for me.

Live Review: Mucky Sailor
Impossibly big-mouthed Richard Archer of chart-hugging Staines chancers Hard-Fi props the bar up and gazes amenably into the eyes of his young paramour, trying hard not to notice being noticed and no doubt savouring the relaxed Thursday night vibrations and eclectic vinyl selections of the Chicken Shack DJs.

CD Review: The Birdman Rallies - Moons
La! A new release from The Birdman Rallies! This is a brilliant (brilliant in the sense of effervescent, ebullient) album, just like all of the other material released by The Birdman Rallies, though with the added benefit of greater duration than their previous collections.

Live Review: Haven + The Crescent
What a stupid rule! You're in the venue but to get to the room where the bands will be performing you have to go back outside and round to the other entrance instead of walking ten yards through the doors in front of you, quickly supping off the fresh pint you've just acquired!

CD Review: The Wind-up Birds - The Land
'Good Shop Shuts' hits the listener from the start with a barrage upon the ears. Punk-ridden teen angst is present in the form of Libertine-esque lo-fi production, and while energetic, the song on the whole barely surpasses a fairly generic punk tune.

CD Review: Joseph & David - Rise Up The Sun
For a few days now I've been promising myself a night of listening to music just for the hell of it. It's been a while (at least a week) since I delved through the collection to rediscover a forgotten gem, trawled the web to find something new, or indulged in a spot of nostalgia via a certain video-sharing website.

CD Review: Red Star - Law And Order
'Law And Order,' the debut album from Huddersfield's Red Star, kicks off with 'Northerners (In London Town).' This piece of low-key, laidback indie grooviness relies mainly on a strong vocal performance from frontman Will Bloy and some simple electro beats that add that extra oomph to the chorus.

CD Review: Thursday - Common Existence
'Common Existence,' the fifth full length offering from post-hardcore pioneers Thursday, kicks off in the best possible fashion, with impassioned anthem 'Resuscitation of a Dead Man.' This album-opener delivers a shot of abrasive noise, threaded through with long, grinding chords and black-hearted synths.

CD Review: White Boys For Gay Jesus - White Boys For Brothel Med Clinics

CD Review: Alestorm - Black Sails At Midnight
'Black Sails At Midnight' is one of those rare albums that'll leave you wondering "why has no-one tried this before?" Scottish four piece Alestorm take the gimmicky-but-actually-pretty-fun battle metal formula popularised by European metal bands such as Turisas, and replace references to Odin and Vikings with tales of quests, treasure and wenches.

CD Review: Cardiacs - Concerts Vol I & II
I give you fair warning.  I am about to break the ancient, time-honoured and globally respected code of the International Covenant of Authors, Note-Takers, Writers, Reviewers, Interviewers, Talkers and Editors (or ICANTWRITE for short) covering the critique of musical releases and/or performances on precisely 2 counts.  In fact one of these has already been broken.  So apologies if this warning comes too late in the day and has already caused you unnecessary distress.
