Remember those bands you had when you were in school? The one I was in, unfortunately, split up after a while, but I'm convinced we'd sound like this if we had kept it together.

CD Review: Vessels - Two Words & A Gesture
Shoegaze and experimental music can be quite hit-and-miss. Some would probably argue, with more than just slight condescension, it's more often miss; but then it's these factions that miss out on some of the more interesting artistic visions on the music scene.

Live Review: Sound Asleep + 3 Words Too Long + Exit 51 + Dum Flux + Cutout Hero
CUTOUT HERO This three-piece were the first band of the day that I saw as I was late. Playing a mellow sort of rock/punk with even a little bit of ska thrown in every now and then, they sounded pretty good for their age, and were reasonably well rehearsed.

CD Review: Black Nielson - Love Song To Chan Marshall
The words "best kept secrets" in anyone's biog may as well read "Never really made it... yet" and the story of Black Nielson would certainly go some way to supporting the theory.

CD Review: The Flaming Lips - The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
Wayne Coyne: the best front man ever? Possibly: with his charisma and knack for writing wacky songs that still send a powerful enough message, one wouldn't think that the man was forty years of age before achieving worldwide success with his flamboyant outfit The Flaming Lips.

CD Review: Lail Arad - Who Am I
Dripping with a very British sense of humour, Lail Arad could very easily be described as the replacement for Lilly Allen, but that would be very harsh indeed - although it does give an idea of the genre this fits into.

In my time of reviewing I've come across some corking press releases. Often written by the bands themselves, usually in a painfully awkward third person, press releases seem to be a way of hoping against hope that the reviewer won't actually listen to the CD and will just copy/paste their somewhat ambitious statements into their evaluation.

Live Review: Jon Gomm + Dorne + Mark Wilson + Baxter Trappe
The upstairs room at the Cardigan Arms is a perfect place for an acoustic gig. With its small, dark room, the atmosphere is made even better by the dozen or so candles that are situated around the room, creating a very intimate feel to the whole place.

Ok first things first I got to this gig rather late and missed the first two acts. I really felt quite bad about that, and it also means I have no words to write about David Broad and Michael Rossiter (who I am sure were fantastic if the last two acts were any thing to go by)...

CD Review: The Music - s/t
The Music have had a phenomenal start to their working lives. Three years on from their origins in Kippax, expectations and circumstances have said "this album has got to be massive." Early gigs at the Duchess of York in January 2000 showed glimpses of their root talents: a searing voice and twitching charismatic in Robert Harvey and a guitar trance demon in Adam Nutter.

The rapid rise of computers in the workplace has revolutionised the art of skiving. Whereas once slacking off was itself a complex process of fabricating meetings and leaving coats on the backs of chairs, now any imbecile (at least any imbecile not restricted by those pesky filtering systems) is only a click away from an online escape route from the drab and dreary reality of the modern office.

Sheffield over the past year has lost out on four tradesmen but gained yet another new name to add to their increasing list of bands that are discharging out of the city and becoming national, if not global names. The evening kicks off with MOJO PIN, a young band who I have not heard before. Scuzzy indie chancers and childhood playmates of Pete Doherty, Cazals caused a few excited murmurs in the East London grotty party scene a few years back, and after being spoken about in the same sentences as The Rakes and The Paddingtons, signed, quite (un)surprisingly to the 'super-cool' and 'uber-trendy' French label Kitsune.

Live Review: The Maccabees + Peggy Sue and the Pirates
Peggy Sue really deserved this high-profile support slot with The Maccabees. The two female voices of Katy Klaw and Rosa Rex are just so mature, soulful and powerful for their young bodies that they seemed to stun the crowd into awed appreciation.

CD Review: Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences - We Are Not Other People
'Unexpected Error' makes no effort to ease the listener into the weird and wonderful world of Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences, as it opens with a blaring, Atari-esque sound effect that'll make you wonder whether this is, in fact, a comedy album.

"Please excuse us, it's very hot in these cravats" winks Yellow Stripe Nine's quirky keyboardist with a cheeky smile pinned haphazardly across his malleable face, tongue firmly slotted into cheek, twinkly eyes joking merrily along with all this talk of decadence, sleaze and spotless white spats.

Aces & Eights are one of the only recent bands who have not come directly from MySpace. Rather than relying on the support of their, admittedly, over 1000 "Friends" they've worked their way up through the grimy Leeds pubs to arrive, not quite signed and slightly tainted, at the Cockpit.
