AIR MAX '97 - Progress And Memory (Liminal Sounds) 12"

Beyond the very 'on trend' name you'll find that this isn't some retrospecting dalliance with cool, this is more a love letter to far flung futurists, warping and wrenching around time-signatures and genre-defying it's way into a percussive, dubby bump...Getting props from Rinse FM and Mary Anne Hobbs it's a weird 4 tracker for sure, leaving you not quite sure what speed it should play at but that's part of it's undeniable charm....

VARIOUS - MUSEUM OF FUTURE SOUND IV (Flogsta Danshall)

If the word 'Jahtari' makes your liver quiver, if you're a child of the Mega Drive / Nintendo days, if you know what a SID CHIP is...Well I think this will perk you up like a joystick. Full of Bit Sounds this is like a trip to a parallel universe where the arcades were the place where people raved, and loading screens were the visuals. Perfect re-imagined games score good enough to get down to, this is a freakish fantasy that will appeal to gamers and ravers alike.

STRAIGHT ARROWS 'Rising' (Agitated) CD / LP

Don't know what it is about this band. Maybe it's just me, but they just seem to ooze something indefinably great. Reverb'n'fuzz-laden garage punk, scrappy as hell but with loads of energy and melodies that hook into your head. For fans of Oh Sees, 'Pebbles' compilations, and generally fine punked-out rock'n'roll.

FHLOSTON PARADIGM 'The Phoenix' (Hyperdub) CD / LP

A project of King Britt that draws together soul, techno and sci-fi synths with rough textures and damaged rhythms. Inventive and forward-thinking music with lots of stylistic threads that pull together in Britt's experienced hands...

LEE BAINS III & THE GLORY FIRES 'Dereconstructed' (Sub Pop) CD / LP

Crunching mix of southern rock, soul and punk from Lee Bains III (Dexateens) and band. Thought-provoking lyrics of religion, tradition and rebellion delivered with urgency and a full-on rock'n'roll party spirit...

Contemporary take on Moorish griot music from Mauritania, with Noura Mint Seymali's vocals whirling over hypnotic, funk-fuelled rhythms and electric bluesy guitar lines...

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS 'Emma Jean' (Truth & Soul) CD / LP

Deep, soulful and real funky. This ticks all the right boxes. Lee's voice is so full of emotion and the band so on it that it manages to bypass a lot of clichés. This is a heartfelt album and stands up to repeat plays. Check!
